JOHN M. TOVAR, PHARMD
Associate Professor
Dr. John M. Tovar joined PCOM School of Pharmacy following six years of living abroad where he served as CEO and Academic Director
for RICERCA Medical and Clinical Services in the city of Arequipa, Peru.
Prior to that, he served as an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice
at the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy and as a clinical
assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University
of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Tovar graduated from the University of Florida with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
degree in 2002 and then completed a two-year fellowship in family medicine at the
same institution. He is a registered pharmacist in Texas.
Dr. Tovar has been published in numerous medical journals including the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, Journal of Pharmacy Practice, Postgraduate Medicine and Journal of Family Practice. He has also co-authored chapters on infectious disease topics in two medical/pharmacy
handbooks: Internal Medicine at Your Fingertips and Pharmacotherapy Point of Care Guide.
Dr. Tovar has presented at numerous national and international meetings. His areas
of research interest include cardiovascular and infectious diseases. More recently, he
has begun researching teaching methodologies used in the education of pharmacists.
He is also a passionate advocate for immunizations.
