Mindy George-Weinstein, PhD, earned her bachelor's in Nursing and doctorate in Developmental Biology from Thomas Jefferson University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also a licensed registered nurse in Pennsylvania.
Dr. George-Weinstein has been engaged in research and teaching throughout her career. She joined the faculty of PCOM as an assistant professor in 1989 and was promoted to full professor in 2007. She also held positions at the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. In 2017 she returned to PCOM as the Chief Research and Science Officer overseeing the Division of Research that provides guidance for project development, grant submissions, operational support, resources and intramural funding. In her teaching and research careers, Dr. George-Weinstein has received several honors, including the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, American Medical Women's Association Gender Equity Award, Kappa Sigma Phi Society Teaching Award, the National Student Medical Association Mentor Award and Distinguished Alumni Award of the Jefferson College of Biomedical Sciences.
Her research has been continuously funded by grants, contracts and awards from the National Institutes of Health, foundations, companies and an anonymous donor for 45 years. Her laboratory discovered cells that are critical for normal embryonic development, participate in wound healing and protect neurons in the retina and brain in collaboration with PCOM faculty, staff and students, and investigators at other universities and companies.
Additionally, she is a co-inventor on three patents and published over 50 peer-reviewed papers with 75 PCOM student co-authors. Their research group is currently focused on developing therapeutics to treat diseases of the eye.
