SAVITA ARYA, MD PATHOLOGY, DPB, MBBS
Professor
Dr. Savita Arya teaches pathology in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at PCOM South Georgia. She received her MD followed by a three-year residency training in pathology from
the University of Mumbai, India.
Dr. Arya has almost three decades of experience in teaching medical students. Prior
to joining PCOM, she worked as an associate professor at Ross University School of
Medicine. She has held several academic positions including assistant dean of basic
sciences, director of medical education, course coordinator of pathology and module
director of the Heme-Lymph module. She has also served as chair of grand rounds committee,
vice chair of student promotions committee and chair of curriculum management sub-committee
for the CAAM-HP and DMB accreditation visits; and Exam Soft manager. She is Chair
of the Faculty Senate at PCOM.
Dr. Arya increases student engagement in classroom utilizing interactive learning
strategies like Think-Pair-share collaboration and peer learning activities, and a
myriad of question types via audience response systems. She also uses the flipped
classroom strategy of active learning, allowing learners to explore content independently
before class, optimizing the use of classroom time encouraging students to apply their
basic science knowledge, and engage in higher-order and critical thinking, rather
than passively listening to lectures.
Since joining PCOM, she has been actively involved in scholarly activity, delivering
several oral presentations at national osteopathic conferences. She also initiated
as well as engaged and mentored osteopathic and biomedical PCOM students in anatomical histopathology research. The student mentored research has been presented as posters at the PCOM Research Days, national, and international
conferences as well as been published in academic journals.
