SHU ZHU, MD, PHD
Professor of Physiology

Dr. Zhu has teaching experience in physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and clinical medicine. While a faculty member in the Department of Physiology in Dalian Medical University, Dr. Zhu taught students from different levels and different schools such as School of Basic Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Allied Health. Dr. Zhu was also highly involved in the development and teaching of Integrated Functional Laboratory in the medical students’ curriculum.

Currently, she is teaching in PCOM Georgia's Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences programs. Her teaching responsibilities mainly focus on respiratory physiology and endocrine physiology in the DO program, while teaching courses such as scientific communication, vascular control mechanisms and historical development current themes in biomedical science research in the biomedical sciences program. She also serves as a mentor and committee member to PCOM Georgia students pursuing master's degrees.

Education

  • Postdoctoral Training, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Georgia Regents University, Augusta, GA, 2007-2012
  • PhD, Pharmacology from Georgia Regents University, Augusta, GA, 2007
  • MD, Clinical Medicine, Dalian Medical University, Dalian, Liaoning, China, 1997

Research

Dr. Zhu's research specialties are electrophysiology and molecular biology, and her research interests focus on the regulation of ion channels in cardiopulmonary diseases. Specifically, the expression and regulation of large conductance, calcium- and voltage-activated potassium (BKCa) channels by protein kinases in pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells from pulmonary hypertensive animal model. Her research work has been published in several high-reputation peer-reviewed journals such as American Journal of Physiology, Cardiovascular Research, and Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
