GA-PCOM students, faculty and staff joined the Gwinnett event to help raise funds for breast cancer technology and access to health care.
The cool, rainy weather on Saturday morning, October 27, 2018, didn’t dampen the spirits of the Georgia Campus – Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (GA-PCOM) team members who took to the Coolray Field track, along with about 1,500 other participants, to raise money for breast cancer through Paint Gwinnett Pink. This year, GA-PCOM was a proud sponsor of the 5K walk/run event presented by Gwinnett Medical Center in partnership with Paint Georgia Pink.
A team of 14 students, faculty and staff members, wearing pink t-shirts and specially made GA-PCOM pink pompom beanies, participated in the event under the leadership of Administrative Services and Events Manager Kim Lucier. Lucier said that many of the team members have been touched by breast cancer either as survivors or as family members of those with breast cancer.
GA-PCOM Chief Campus Officer Bryan Ginn said, “At GA-PCOM, we are committed to community service. I applaud our team for working with Gwinnett Medical Center and Paint Gwinnett Pink to make a difference in the life of our community.”
The proceeds from Paint Gwinnett Pink, which remain in the community, provide funding for the latest diagnostic technology for breast cancer, access to mammograms and surgical consultations, and patient comfort items needed during cancer treatment.
Lucier noted, “The community’s participation in the event was amazing. It was wonderful to connect with the sponsors and participants, many of whom have been part of this from the beginning.”
Aside from Team Captain Lucier, team members, who had the opportunity to bond while either walking, running, eating breakfast and/or lunch, and participating in kickboxing and Jazzercise, included: Lidia Aldea, Jana Byrd (Biomed ’19), Lisa D’Addieco, Michelle Ingram, Shubha Kayarthodi, PhD, Daniel Maysonet (Biomed ’19), James McGary (PharmD ’20), Darnae Parks, Tamara Scaccia, Alisa Toney, Porshaye Watkins (Biomed ’19), Julie Wickman, PharmD, and Michelle Wood.
Established in 2005, PCOM Georgia is a branch campus of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), a private, not-for-profit, accredited institution of higher education with a storied 125-year history dedicated to the healthcare professions.
