The Medical Explorers program is aimed at high school juniors and seniors interested
in health care. Members learn about a variety of health care careers and take part
in a number of hands-on activities.
A 24-year-old male was driving about 40 mph on Duluth Highway when he glanced down
at his cell phone to read a text. He lost control of the car, running over a curb
before smashing into a telephone pole. He was wearing a seat belt and an air bag deployed
– no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The person is in extreme pain.
This is the scenario that a group of high school juniors and seniors, members of the
Gwinnett Medical Center Medical Explorers Post 540, explored at GA-PCOM on the evening of January 9. The students learned about the various components of
diagnosing and treating lower leg fractures. With the guidance of GA-PCOM students,
faculty and staff, the Medical Explorers studied this hypothetical medical case from
the perspective of a physician, physician assistant, physical therapist and pharmacist.
The Medical Explorer program is geared toward high school juniors and seniors interested
in health care. One evening a month during the academic school year, the students
meet at different posts. Program members learn about a variety of health care careers
and participate in hands-on activities.
