Fourth year pharmacy student Jonathan Park (PharmD ’20) was recently named a Walmart
Scholar along with faculty member Xinyu (Eric) Wang, PhD, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the PCOM School of Pharmacy.
The program, funded by Walmart, provides 85 $1,000 scholarships to third and fourth year pharmacy students, residents, fellows and their faculty mentors to attend the Annual Meeting and Teachers Seminar of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), a national organization that represents the interests of pharmacy education.
According to scholarship information, “AACP and Walmart are committed to helping schools of pharmacy ensure there is an adequate number of well-prepared individuals who aspire to join the faculties at institutions across the country.”
Wang said, “It’s a great honor that Jonathan was selected as a 2020 AACP Walmart Scholar through application to this competitive and prestigious program. We are looking forward to attending the virtual AACP annual meeting in July and interacting with other Walmart Scholars and their mentors through online seminars and meetings.“
In 2019, AACP celebrated the fifteenth year of the Walmart Scholarship Fund. The application
process requires that letters from both the student and the faculty mentor demonstrate
both parties have a strong interest in enhancing their career in academic pharmacy.
Park said, “I’m extremely grateful and lucky to have had Dr. Wang choose me as a potential candidate as a Walmart Scholar. I was already fortunate enough to be involved in research with Dr. Wang since my second year at PCOM School of Pharmacy; I could not have asked for a better mentor to support me. To be awarded the Walmart Scholarship is a great honor, and I’m excited to attend the virtual seminars to further develop my teaching abilities.”
During his second year at PCOM School of Pharmacy, Park served as the president of PCOM Georgia’s chapter of Rho Chi, the pharmacy academic honor organization. He currently works as a pharmacist at CVS Pharmacy® and plans to pursue a residency next year with a dream to become a professor of pharmacy in the future.
