PCOM Improving Access to Healthcare Careers
January 13, 2017
Committing to Diversity: PCOM's Career Opportunities Academy is working to combat
a lack access to care for patients in minority and low-income areas.
Physician shortages have caused a lack of access to care for patients, particularly
in minority and low-income areas.
As a part of its commitment to diversity, PCOM launched its Opportunities Academy during the summer of 2016. The Opportunities Academy is an intensive, five-week pilot
program designed to provide a pipeline that routes motivated students with an interest
in STEM+M toward four-year degree programs and into training for the health professions.
The Academy immerses participating high school students in science, health and medicine
curricula.
The 33 students in the inaugural Opportunities Academy class studied cancer, infectious
disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and neurological disease through lectures,
demonstrations and field trips to some of Philadelphia’s most prestigious scientific
institutions. Students also had the opportunity to learn from a diverse group of leaders
in the health care field.
