PCOM Recognized for Commitment to Diversity
October 16, 2017Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) today received the 2017 Health
Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
The award recognizes U.S. medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, nursing, and allied
health schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“Diversity is a core component of our institutional identity,” said Jay S. Feldstein, DO ’81, president and CEO. “More than just a top-down initiative, we strive to imbue our
entire campus culture with a sense of inquiry, respect and appreciation.”
“PCOM’s commitment to diversity is a key pillar of PCOM 2020, the College’s strategic
vision,” said Marcine Pickron-Davis, PhD, chief diversity and community relations officer. “The initiatives we have established
on campus to foster a more welcoming and inclusive campus exemplifies PCOM as a diversity
champion and leader in the field of osteopathic medical education.”
Over the past several years, PCOM has embarked on several initiatives aimed at creating
a more diverse and inclusive campus climate. Most recently, the offices of Admissions
and Diversity and Community Relations have partnered with minority-focused higher
education organizations to actively recruit more minority students and faculty members.
Additionally, later this month the College will launch a new, annual lecture series on the unique health issues of the LGBTQ community.
“The Health Professions HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous
application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students
and employees—and best practices for both—continued leadership support for diversity,
and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion. We take a holistic approach to
reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our
standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are
woven into the work being accomplished every day across their campus,” said Lenore
Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
All HEED Award winners will be featured in the December 2017 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. For more information about the 2017 Health Professions HEED Award, visit
