July 19, 2022Krupesh Patel’s (MS/BS ‘22) inspiration to become a physician came from spending summer
breaks during his youth with his grandparents in the Indian village where they lived.
“My granddad would take me with him to meet his close friend, a doctor, who worked
at a clinic,” Patel said. “Every day I observed the doctor treat the villagers who
often did not have the money to pay for medical care. Seeing the change that the doctor
brought to the lives of these villagers inspired me to do the same.”
Patel’s goal of becoming a physician is within reach as he is set to join the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program in August, and he said his family played an important role in inspiring his journey.
“The hard work that my grandparents and my parents have put in to afford me the opportunity
to get a good education and become successful in life keeps me motivated and pushes
me to do my best in every task I am challenged with,” he said.
Ed Shaw, PhD, biomedical sciences program director, said “Krupesh is so hard working and always
participates and interacts with others. He’s been extremely supportive to other students
during his time in the biomedical sciences program here.”
A Valdosta High School and Valdosta State University alumnus, Patel said having his
hometown and family less than an hour away from PCOM South Georgia made his graduate school decision an easy one.
“Being able to go to medical school and then practice in the same community I grew
up in was an important factor that attracted me to the PCOM South Georgia campus,” he said. “I chose the biomedical sciences program to help me better myself as a
student prior to starting medical school. Attending medical school while completing
the master's program gave me the chance to witness what the life of a medical student
is like and gave me the motivation I needed to keep fighting for the goals I set out
in college.”
