PCOM's simulation center team is committed to advancing medical education through
experiential learning and assessments. Our collaborative approach fosters the promotion
of excellent clinical practice and ensures medical professionals are better educated.
By increasing simulation center activities and enhancing community engagement, we
aim to revolutionize healthcare education.
Academic Year 2022-2023
Highlights
4,432 hours of recorded simulations
9,507 individual patient-recorded encounters (6,671 for DO, 2,012 for PA Studies,
358 for psychology and 466 for pharmacy).
520 team-based simulations
11,331 total recorded sessions
As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure uniformity and sufficiency across all sites,
PCOM acquired new simulation equipment. The College also initiated a capital project
to transition the video and audio capture systems from local servers to a cloud-based
platform to enhance efficiency and accessibility of the systems.
Standardized resources and a new capture system allow high-fidelity simulations to
be an integral part of the curriculum. The upgraded capture system facilitates more
efficient assessment of student performance in diverse settings, and allows for formative
and summative assessments, enabling longitudinal tracking of student clinical skills.
PCOM's Simulation Centers host a variety of events throughout the academic year including
high-fidelity simulations, tours, ultrasound labs, graduate medical education events
and more. Medical students experience simulations including areas such as orthopedics,
labor and delivery, head injuries, abdominal issues and cardiac events. Students also
have the opportunity to practice intubation, lumbar puncture, suturing, phlebotomy,
injections, airway management, and other primary care skills.
Connecting with the Community
PCOM is working to influence the future of medicine by inspiring young learners to
pursue careers in healthcare. In the past year, Sim Center personnel have engaged
nearly 500 high school students and 50 elementary school students. Our team has participated
in numerous events with high school and college advisors and continues work to connect
with representatives from state and local government.
