Story Slams have grown in popularity over the past few years, stimulating creative dialogue on a number of topics. Last fall, PCOM’s Coalition for Healthcare, Humanities, and the Arts (CHHARTS) held their first slam, during which students, faculty and staff shared short, personal stories related to their experiences in the world of health care.
That same format is also used to highlight and communicate scientific research. The College recently held its first annual Research Slam, through which faculty and researchers gave 5-minute overviews of their projects. The Philadelphia campus departments of Bio-Medical Sciences, Geriatrics, Library and Educational Informational Services and Psychology were represented as the speakers discussed their ongoing investigations in areas such as Alzheimer’s and ocular diseases, osteoarthritis, mortality risk factors associated with gastric bypass surgery, and opioid reduction.
The Research Slam, implemented by Ilene Warner-Maron, PhD, Office of Professional Development and Online Learning, Mindy George-Weinstein, PhD, chief research and science officer and Jacquelyn White, Division of Research, was designed to encourage collaborations across departments and campuses. The event was also meant to inspire students to become involved in investigations related to their fields of interest and career trajectories.
The lively and informative presentations by PCOM researchers represented distillations
of, in some cases, decades of work, and the efforts of their research support staff
and students. Investigators at the Philadelphia campus said they are looking forward
to the next Research Slam, which will be held at GA-PCOM.
