Residency Program

The residency program in dermatology encompasses three years after completing a one year transitional or preliminary year for a total of four years. The program provides exposure to clinical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. Multiple diagnostic and dermatologic physical modalities are employed for a variety of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric dermatologic conditions.

The residents are exposed on a regular basis to multiple patient ethnic groups through the primary academic teaching clinic located in Roswell, GA (outside Atlanta, GA). In addition, gross and dermatopathology and medical mycology, phototherapy, dermatologic surgery, cutaneous oncology and cosmetic dermatology will be the core of the residency.

The program emphasizes supervised direct patient care while utilizing various surgical and physical modalities that the resident will learn during the residency program’s three years. Residents will be supervised at all times with opportunities to master dermatological examinations, surgical techniques and extensive coding/billing.

Resident didactics include weekly textbook reviews, dermatopathology slides, clinical images and board review sessions. The residents also attend a monthly journal club, weekly histopathology sessions and monthly grand rounds at Emory University Department of Dermatology. In addition, residents participate in monthly business meetings focused on the key aspects of running a successful and efficient dermatology practice. The dermatology residency program’s growth and success at PCOM North Fulton will be dependent on our variety of dedicated teaching faculty.

The residents attend a variety of didactic courses, including the yearly meeting of the AOCD and also a variety of other seminars, such as the annual AAD meeting, at the discretion of the program director. They are allowed a one-month elective time during each year to advance their knowledge of pediatric dermatology and with other general dermatologists in the area. They are encouraged to do scientific projects, contribute to dermatologic articles and present at both local and national meetings.

The PCOM dermatology residency program mission is to mentor and provide educational and clinical experiences, settings and resources that produce outstanding dermatologists with the ability to practice ethically and passionately in their field of medicine.

Our program aims to:

1. develop physicians that are proficient knowledgeable leaders in dermatology.
2. produce compassionate, caring residents who engage in not only their patients but their community surroundings.
3. develop residents that have a strong understanding that learning should be a continuous attribute.

Applicants must have completed an approved intern/transitional year to be considered for the program.
