Micrographic Surgery & Dermatologic Oncology
Fellowship Program

Director: Christopher Buckley, DO
Positions: 2
Location: Atlanta, GA
Program Length: 1 year

The one-year Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship Program at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine prepares dermatologist to further their career goals into becoming well-rounded, confident Mohs surgeons. The program is structured to ensure that each dermatologist meets board certification requirements in Mohs surgery and cutaneous oncology through comprehensive didactic and clinical training.

The mission of PCOM’s Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship Program is to mentor and provide educational and clinical experiences, settings, and resources that produce outstanding micrographic surgeons with the ability to practice ethically and passionately in their field of medicine. PCOM’s philosophy supports personal growth, career development, collaboration, and life-long education.

  1. Develop knowledge and skills to become a leader in future research through participation in scholarly activity. Fellows are encouraged to partake in scientific contributions and leadership within the field of Mohs surgery. Through various learning opportunities during the year, such as didactic sessions, conferences, and journal club, the fellow will develop the ability to:
    • Assess, critique, and synthesize the medical literature and apply it to patient care.
    • Refine clinical questions, test hypotheses, properly design studies, analyze and interpret data.
    • Share this knowledge with colleagues and other professionals both orally and in writing.
  2. Community-based rotations: PCOM faculty serves the community through patient-centered care. The fellow learns how to approach the patient and learns by identifying an individual’s specific health needs and desired health outcomes to make healthcare decisions and quality measurements. Patients are partners with their healthcare providers, and providers treat patients not only from a clinical perspective, but also from an emotional, mental, social, and financial perspective.
  3. Career development: PCOM’s faculty participate in monthly conferences with the fellow to foster career development and personal growth. The faculty serve as mentors and are easily approached throughout the fellowship to assure that the fellow feels supported in their future goals.
  4. Develop knowledge and skills to achieve competency in the six areas of Core Competency as defined by the ACGME.
  5. Provide training by increasing fellow independence gradually over one year.
  6. Promote and gain knowledge of ethical practice in the field of dermatologic surgery and dermatology.
