Internal Medicine
Residency Program

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine's accredited three-year internal medicine residency prepares physicians to successfully sit for the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine and/or the American Board of Internal Medicine certification and to embark on fulfilling careers as internists.

An outstanding feature of this intensive program is its board success record. Other features are a singular emphasis on academics and teaching, and the flexibility each resident has in customizing the residency to suit his or her particular areas of interest while completing all requirements.

Our interns train at three hospitals—Temple Health – Chestnut Hill Hospital (TH-CHH), Roxborough Memorial Hospital, and Jefferson Abington Hospital. The different patient populations at these hospitals expose our residents to a variety of pathology. Additionally, our residents work with many different attending physicians from many varying specialties.

We cannot stress enough the close relationships that we develop with each other in our internal medicine program along with the close relationships that we build with our attending physicians (medicine and subspecialties). We have dedicated attending physicians who are passionate in training, educating and developing our knowledge and clinical skills. This atmosphere that we have created here at PCOM has produced many successful physicians year after year.

We welcome all medical students who wish to do an audition rotation with our program. Please contact us for further information and follow us on Instagram.

First year

The first year of PCOM's Internal Medicine Residency Program includes:

  • Medicine (eleven months)
  • Pulmonary/critical care medicine (one month)
  • Emergency room medicine (one month)

Your months on medicine services will include attending specific services, floor services and a hospitalist service. While you are on an attending specific service, you will work closely with a group of internal medicine physicians who will guide you through the management of different diseases while teaching important clinical skills while you round. Along with your attending physicians, you will make important decisions in the care of your patients. While you are on a floor service rotation, you will be taking care of patients on an entire floor (medicine/surgery, progressive care, cardiac telemetry). You will work with multiple internal medicine physicians, while also interacting with many of the specialists whom you have consulted on your patients. For the last several years, we have established a hospitalist service, where our interns and residents work with hospitalist physicians, where they confer their unique insight on hospital medicine and teach while doing bedside rounds. All of your months of medicine will be part of a team of attending physicians, residents, interns and students.

Your pulmonary/critical care medicine month will be done in our ICU at Temple Health – Chestnut Hill Hospital. You will work as a team with two interns, two residents and students under the guidance of our three very skilled board certified pulmonary/critical care medicine physicians. Your education during your pulmonary/critical care medicine month will include the management of sepsis, post-cardiac resuscitation hypothermia protocol, ARDS, mechanical ventilation, GI bleeding, and ACS. We will teach you how to perform central lines, arterial lines and much more.

Second and third years

During your second and third year of residency, you will continue to advance in your training of medicine, while being offered four to six months of elective rotations where you can further train in the fields that interest you the most. Your training can be done anywhere in the country. Most of our residents take this opportunity to train with many highly skilled specialists at Temple Health – Chestnut Hill Hospital and Roxborough Memorial Hospital, as well as training at tertiary care centers in and around Philadelphia such as the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson Hospital, Deborah Heart and Lung, Rowan University Hospital and Lankenau Hospital. This also allows our residents to rotate through programs where they are interested in pursuing a fellowship. We have an excellent track record of matching many of our graduates into cardiology, pulmonary/critical care, nephrology, infectious disease and other programs.

The education of our interns and residents is a top priority. There is morning report each morning whether you are at Roxborough Memorial Hospital, Jefferson Abington Hospital, or Temple Health – Chestnut Hill Hospital. This allows interns who were on call overnight to go over cases they admitted among attending physicians of varying specialties. Residents, interns and medical students are all required to attend morning report. Noon lectures, where specialists come to lecture on varying topics, are also held.

At each hospital, chief residents are in charge of coordinating all didactic lectures, i.e., core curriculum, case presentations and journal club. Residents also participate in the education of interns and medical students. There are daily morning reports and lectures, medical grand rounds and mandatory meetings of groups such as Tumor Board and Morbidity & Mortality conferences.

The PCOM Internal Medicine Residency Program has received ACGME Continued Accreditation with Osteopathic Recognition.
