Behavioral Intervention Team

PCOM is committed to providing a safe and secure working and learning environment for all members of the campus community. To that end, the PCOM BIT (Behavioral Intervention Team) provides proactive and reactive assistance to students exhibiting concerning behaviors. Some students experience high levels of stress in their lives, as a result, faculty and staff may encounter students whose behaviors are concerning, disruptive, or threatening towards themselves or others. If you experience or witness a student in crisis, please feel free to send an email to BIT@pcom.edu.

The Behavioral Intervention Team's mission is to provide a proactive, coordinated, and planned approach to the identification, assessment, management, and, where possible, reduction and/or prevention of behavior that falls into the extreme risk, high risk, moderate risk, and low risk classification.

BIT logoKey objectives for the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) include:

  • To provide support and assistance to the student in crisis and to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
  • Review information from faculty, staff, students, and/or community members and formalize support processes to provide for early intervention.
  • Centralize collection and assessment of concerning student behaviors (Student Affairs via Maxient).
  • Coordinate follow-up. Ensure that services, support, and resources are deployed effectively.
  • To utilize a formal, uniform protocol for communication, coordination, and intervention.
  • Balance FERPA, HIPAA, and counselor privilege with the University's need-to-know and emergency communication needs.
  • Confirm and monitor compliance with any identified safety or actions plans associated with the student’s programming.
  • To address system-wide considerations surrounding the crisis (i.e. PCOM Public Safety and community members counseling needs).
  • To work toward the prevention of similar crises in the future.
